Kandilli Observatory Prepares the Seferihisar Coastline For a Potential Tsunami Disaster. The Tsunami Awareness Seminars Held by the Observatory in Seferihisar Were Met With Great Interest

The CoastWave2 Project, carried out by the Kandilli Observatory under the leadership of the United Nations UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC) in collaboration with METU, has begun with great enthusiasm. On 13 January 2026, tsunami awareness training seminars were organized for a total of 600 students at four schools providing primary, secondary, and high school education in the Seferihisar district. Within the scope of the seminars, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Selda Altuncu Poyraz and  Alev Topçular, M.Sc.delivered age-appropriate content to students, covering fundamental information on the formation of tsunamis, their impacts, and protection methods, as well as Turkey’s tsunami risk and the monitoring, warning, and research activities on tsunamis conducted by the Kandilli Observatory.

Our education and community awareness activities are being implemented in a systematic and uninterrupted manner to enhance the resilience of our coastlines against tsunami hazards.
