The European Seismological Commission (ESC) 2026 General Assembly Was Held in Istanbul

The European Seismological Commission (ESC) 2026 General Assembly (ESC2026) was held in Istanbul between September 6 and 11, 2026.

Jointly organized by the Presidential Disaster and Local Government Policies Board, Boğaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute (KRDAE), the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), Middle East Technical University (METU), and the Earthquake Engineering Association of Turkey, the congress brought together approximately 1,000 participants—including scientists and researchers from various countries across the globe, as well as representatives from public institutions and the sector—establishing a significant platform for sharing scientific knowledge and experience.

The opening of the congress was marked by the keynote addresses delivered by Minister of Interior Mustafa Çiftçi, President of AFAD Governor Ali Hamza Pehlivan, Governor of Istanbul Davut Gül, Member of the Presidential Disaster and Local Government Policies Board Prof. Dr. Nurcan Meral Özel, Director of KRDAE Prof. Dr. Özer Çinicioğlu, and Vice President of the ESC Prof. Dr. Ayşegül Askan.

Throughout the week, current research and developments across diverse fields of earthquake science—particularly seismology, earthquake hazard and risk, ground motions, seismic monitoring, engineering seismology, and disaster risk reduction—were addressed.

The congress provided an opportunity for KRDAE to share its ongoing research across various disciplines with the international scientific community and to foster scientific collaborations among diverse fields of study.
