CoastWAVE 2.0 Project Has Commenced

The project “Strengthening the Resilience of Coastal Communities in the North-East Atlantic and Mediterranean Regions Against Tsunamis and Other Sea-Level Related Coastal Hazards (CoastWAVE 2.0),” carried out in cooperation between our Institute and Middle East Technical University (METU) and under the leadership of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (UNESCO-IOC), has been implemented.

Within the scope of the project, in the Seferihisar district of İzmir, which was selected as the pilot region; it is aimed to prepare tsunami inundation and evacuation plans, develop risk reduction strategies, and carry out education and social awareness activities. In this direction, coordination meetings were held by the project team with officials from İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, AFAD İzmir Provincial Directorate, and Seferihisar Municipality; inter-institutional cooperation mechanisms and implementation processes were evaluated. Additionally, technical field investigations were conducted in the Sığacık region, which was affected by the tsunami following the October 30, 2020 Aegean Sea (Samos) Earthquake.
