UNESCO CoastWAVE 2.0 Seferihisar Project Introduction Stakeholders Meeting Held

Within the scope of the UNESCO CoastWAVE 2.0 project, the Seferihisar Project Introduction Stakeholders Meeting, organized with the goal of "Strengthening the Resilience of Coastal Communities in the North-East Atlantic and Mediterranean Regions Against Tsunami and Other Sea-Level Related Coastal Hazards," was held on February 3, 2026, at the Izmir Historical Coal Gas Factory under the coordination of our Institute and in cooperation with METU.

Representatives from the Izmir Governorship, Izmir Provincial AFAD, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Izmir Provincial Directorate of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change, Seferihisar District Governorate, and Seferihisar Municipality participated in the meeting.

It is aimed that Seferihisar, designated as the pilot site of the project, will be the first district in Izmir to receive the "Tsunami Ready Recognition Certificate" (Tsunami Ready) and that this model will set a standard for all coastal municipalities of Izmir.

As Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute, with our institutional experience exceeding 150 years and our strong stakeholder network, we continue to build coastal safety on unshakable foundations by integrating early warning systems, coastal sirens, and social awareness efforts in the light of scientific data.
