EMPIRICAL PEAK HORIZONTAL ACCELERATION ATTENUATION RELATIONSHIP FOR NORTH WESTERN TURKEY

The 17 August 1999 Mw=7.4 and 12 November 1999 Mw=7.2 earthquakes and their aftershocks contributed valuable data to the present strong motion record database of Turkey. In this study, a strong motion database was built containing the 17 August 1999 and the 12 November 1999 earthquakes and their aftershocks obtained from the stations operated by Bogaziçi University Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute Earthquake Engineering Department, Istanbul Technical University, and General Directorate of Disaster Affairs Earthquake Research Department.
An empirical peak horizontal acceleration attenuation relationship for north Western Turkey was derived using the database prepared for this study. One-stage, unweighted regression analysis was performed to obtain the attenuation formula.
The attenuation formula derived in this study was compared with the most widely used peak horizontal acceleration relations.
